Summertime.

Hello all, I have a personal journal hosted by Livejournal, but as it is summer and I am continously finding new ways to entertain myself, I decided to make a new journal where everyone could input their thoughts and feelings. I do enjoy reading other people's thoughts.

This blog will not be focused on any one topic or idea. My mind is too random for such organized thinking. I think this could be interesting.

I'm going to start out talking about my major. I'm an anthropology major at University of Maryland. This was not the obvious choice for me. I enjoy music and english much more than anthropology. However, both of these fields did not offer the same opportunities for the life I want to live that anthropology did. I really do enjoy the subject, but oftentimes feel that it is quite as useless as a english degree or music performance degree. If I was smart, I would major in something practical. Both my parents are engineers. They had the right idea.

Anyway, anthropology is fascinating. Sometimes, people are confused when I tell them what my major is, therefore, instead of explaining it myslef, I'll let Dictionary.com do it for me:

an·thro·pol·o·gy
/ˌænθrəˈpɒlədʒi/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[an-thruh-pol-uh-jee] –noun
1. the science that deals with the origins, physical and cultural development, biological characteristics, and social customs and beliefs of humankind.
2. the study of human beings' similarity to and divergence from other animals.
3. the science of humans and their works.
4. Also called philosophical anthropology. the study of the nature and essence of humankind.
[Origin: 1585–95; anthropo- + -logy]

Hmm, that doesn't seem to really communicate why I study anthropology. How about this: I love to read, I love to analyze, I love science, and I want to understand everything. I wanted to major in something which could cater to most, if not all of my interests. Let's try and see if I can get someone to explain it better for me. [Cue search "anthropology" on quoteland.com]

Ah, here's one. Perfect.

"Anthropology is the most humanistic of the sciences and the most scientific of the humanities."
-Alfred L. Kroeber

That's why I'm an anthropology major. Still don't get it? That's your loss, I suppose. Tell me about your major. Why the major? What do you want to do when you grow up? (I'm still figuring that one out. I'll get there eventually.)
